KANNUR: The pay scales of temple employees under the Malabar Devaswom Board (MDB) have been revised.

The minimum basic pay has been fixed as Rs.3,150, Minister for Devaswom G. Sudhakaran said at a press conference here on Saturday.

Mr. Sudhakaran said that the longstanding demand of over 5,400 temple employees in the Malabar region for salary revision was now being met.

There are more than 1,344 temples under the MDB. Over 1,160 employees work in 29 special-grade temples; 890 in 89 A-grade temples; 1,100 in 121 B-grade temples; 398 in 87 C-grade temples; and 1,856 employees in 1,018 D-grade temples.

The Minister said the pay scale of temple employees under the MDB was very low as over 2,500 employees earned a monthly salary of less than Rs.1,200 each.

The employees in the lower category had been drawing a salary of Rs.500 a month, he added.
