KOCHI: The Government is considering a proposal to convert Maharaja's College into a heritage site. A total maintenance package to conserve the rich heritage of the college would be taken up for approval soon.
Education Minister E.T. Mohammed Basheer has asked the College Development Council to come up with a proposal to preserve the century-old buildings on the campus.
The Minister said the Government would provide all help, including financial assistance to preserve the heritage of the college.
A detailed programme will be chalked out for conservation of main buildings on the campus. The proposed renovation of the college will be done without making any changes to the traditional architectural style.
The Public Works Department will be involved in repair of damaged buildings and classrooms.
For the heritage project, the Department will come up with a new plan. The Government will hold discussions with representatives of the College Development Council before finalising the plan.
Maharaja's College will also receive funds for development of infrastructure and academic programmes offered to the student community.
Besides the heritage project, the Education Department has asked the college authorities to submit a plan for renovating the Zoology museum on the campus. Experts will suggest methods to upgrade the existing infrastructure facilities available at the museum.
Augustine A. Thomas, Principal, said the college will also submit a proposal before the Government to initiate an academy-industry interface.
Efforts will be made to improve interaction with representatives of the industry. Students will be given a chance to prove their academic and technical skills. New job-oriented courses will be introduced. Re-structuring of some of the programmes will also be initiated soon.
Maharaja's College will receive funds under the Kerala Fast Forward programme initiated by the Government.
Financial assistance will be provided to develop the college into a centre of excellence.
