Booth agent of CPI(M) dies of heart attack

Thiruvananthapuram: The first phase of the Assembly elections in the State was largely peaceful, except for minor incidents of violence.

The police said a 24-year-old Left Democratic Front (LDF) worker, Kalyana Sundaram, was stabbed following a heated argument with Munnar panchayat president Natarajan outside booth number 77 at Manayoor. The incident occurred around 5.30 p.m. Sundaram has been admitted to a local hospital. His condition was reported to be stable. The police have registered a case of causing grievous hurt against Natarajan in connection with the incident.

An 85-year-old activist of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), John, who was the LDF booth agent in Lutheran Lower Primary School at Balaramapuram in Thiruvananthapuram district, suffered a massive heart attack while representing the case of a woman voter with the presiding officer.

He died on the way to hospital. John fell unconscious while urging the presiding officer to allow a woman voter to exercise her franchise. The woman had turned up at the booth with only a Photostat copy of her election identity card. The incident occurred around 4.30 p.m.

Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, Chirayinkeezh Police Station, Vijayan, 53, suffered a minor heart attack while on patrol duty on polling day. He was rushed to the medical college hospital in a police vehicle. He was reported to be in stable condition.

A tense situation prevailed at Vattappara in Thiruvananthapuram district for some time after unidentified persons, suspected to be LDF activists, damaged a flag mast placed there by Hindu Aikya Vedi activists.

The incident occurred around 1.30 p.m. The police responded to the situation by deploying the "striking force" under the City Police Commissioner's command.

Senior police officials defused the situation after holding talks with local leaders.

A few United Democratic Front (UDF) workers sustained minor injuries in a clash with LDF activists in Mangalapuram Police Station limits in Thiruvananthapuram around 3 p.m. The police have registered a case of simple assault and rioting in connection with the incident.

In Alappuzha, persons suspected to be LDF workers damaged the booth office of the UDF outside St. Michael's School at Thathapally in North police station limits. The incident occurred around 1.30 p.m. Three UDF workers were injured in another clash with LDF activists in Nedumudi Police Station limits around 4.30 p.m. The booth committee office of the UDF was damaged in the incident.

In Pathanamthitta district, persons suspected to be supporters of Sam Eapen, an Independent candidate, assaulted Maneesh, district president of the Kerala Congress Youth Front. The incident occurred in Thiruvalla Police Station limits around 3.45 p.m.

In Kollam district, a Congress worker, Mathew, was injured when UDF workers clashed with Communist Party of India activists in Pooyampalli police station limits around 4.30 p.m.
