THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Academy of Magical Sciences, which has done many experiments in magic, is now getting ready to celebrate World Environment Day with the support of the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment. The academy is organising a State-level eco magic competition and environmental awareness camp here on June 10.
The camp has been planned to create an awareness on environment conservation. Contestants should perform a magic number that comes under the conjuring category and carries messages of environmental conservation spanning five minutes. Priority should be given to sensitisation against reclamation of paddy fields, encroachment on sacred groves, conservation of water sources, proliferation of plastic and pollution caused by vehicles.
Eminent scientists will deliver lectures on contemporary environmental issues at the camp. Registration for the camp is free. The first 100 registrants will be given certificates of participation. Those who are not magicians can also participate in the camp. Aspirants should send their biodata to the academy office at Poojapura before June 3. The contact numbers are 235 8910 and 94477 68535, the academy has informed.
The academy, as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, organised various programmes here on May 13. Magicians from different parts of the country were honoured at a function held at Tagore Theatre.
The celebrations, titled `Vismayam 2006,' had as its main attraction a 10-hour non-stop magic show. Magic shows were held continuously after the inaugural session. Competitions for 12 junior and senior magicians, discussion forum to identify the problems faced by magicians and lecture sessions led by the noted magicians A.K. Dutt, Acy M. Kottalil and Rajamoorthy were also organised.
