KOZHIKODE: The Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad has demanded the implementation of the Kerala paddy field and wetland conservation Act passed by the Assembly in 2008 in letter and spirit.

The Act was passed following rampant reclamation of paddy fields and wetlands in many parts of the State. However, there has been no follow-up to ensure that the practice is stopped, Kavumbai Balakrishnan, president, and V. Vinod, secretary, of the organisation said here on Wednesday.

They said the land mafia was engaged in unauthorised conversion of wetlands. A lot of it had been done cleverly during the election process when officials were on duty.

Unless the State government took immediate steps to implement the Act, the conversion of paddy fields would continue, they said.
