KOCHI: A.A. Manuel, 53, an official at the Accountant General's office here, who had collapsed and suffered brain damage while on election duty on April 29, has died. He died at the hospital early on Thursday afternoon. He is survived by wife Mary A.I., a schoolteacher, and son Anand Alphonse, an engineering student. The family lives at Mundamveli.

A senior accountant at the AG's office, Mr. Manuel was put on election duty and posted as assistant presiding officer at a polling station at St. Reetha's School, Ponnurunni, in the city. On the morning of the election, he collapsed at the polling station and was taken to hospital by policemen on election duty. Mr. Manuel suffered intracerebral haemorrhage and had been unconscious since.

On a complaint by his colleagues a few day ago that the Election Commission had not cared for him and that it had not met his medical expenses, the Chief Election Officer had immediately released Rs.50,000 and the Ernakulam Collector Rs.10,000.
