IN HIGH DEMAND: A scene from a wind farm.

With pollution levels on the rise across the world, clean systems of manufacture are in high demand. Conventional methods of generating energy are known to be contributing to environmental pollution. Alternative energy sources offer relief in this scenario. Wind farms are considered as potential green energy generators. Several locations in Kerala are said to be ideal for setting up wind energy farms. One such farm is being set up in Idukki district. The wind energy farms are not only energy generators, but also money savers, says Ramesh Kymal, an expert in alternative energy systems, who is associated with the project in Idukki. There are many entrepreneurs who are ready to invest in wind energy projects, but there is not enough support from the Government, he says.

In the absence of own sources of gas or oil, harnessing of wind energy and other similar alternative energy sources will be the ideal way to tackle the energy crisis in the country, he says.

Kerala lags behind other States in setting up wind energy projects. Several projects have been set up in States such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan, he points out. The investors in wind farms can gain from carbon credit system. The wind energy farms gain from the credit for clean energy systems as per an international project aimed at ensuring cleaner environs. The projects certified by international bodies derive immense benefits. A few film stars have invested in wind farms outside Kerala. This is in view of the benefits accruing from the projects, Mr. Kymal points out.
