CHANGANASSERY: A conference of Catholic priests has decided to intensify the struggle against the State Government on Kerala Professional Colleges Act and also to form parish-level committees for the purpose.

Speaking to presspersons after inaugurating the priests' conference here on Tuesday, Archbishop Joseph Powathil said it was wrong to dub the struggle of the church as attempts at rekindling yet another `Liberation Struggle'. ``Liberation struggle was a reaction to the `Cell Rule' (initiated by the first communist ministry). However, the situation prevailing in the State today is different from what prevailed then,'' he said. The church was only trying to point out the mistakes, he said.

He set aside the allegation that the church was trying to create a divide among the believers, and said that when the believers know of the facts, they would unanimously oppose the Act. The Archbishop alleged that the Act would affect the very existence of minorities in the State. He said the Act should be opposed unanimously by all democratic forces irrespective of religion, caste or politics.
