PATHANAMTHITTA: Boban and Molly, characters of the renowned cartoonist Toms, will once again enthral Malayalis, now on the small screen.
To celebrate the golden jubilee of the cartoon strip, Toms has teamed up with Vijayakumar to give life to his characters in a mega television serial venture, `Kizhukkamthookku panchayat.' Based on `Bobanum Moliyum,' the serial is produced by the Thiruvalla-based Keraladesom Movies.
`Boban and Molly,' brother and sister hailing from the rural environs of Central Travancore, had captured the minds of Malayalis with their pranks, through the pages of Malayala Manorama weekly, which ran the cartoon for almost four decades.
Toms says the prototypes of Boban and Molly were two naughty kids who stayed next door to his ancestral home in Kuttanad.
Toms himself has written the script for the teleserial.
The television serial would be a full-length satire depicting various day-to-day socio-political issues, said Mr Vijayakumar.
"My cartoon characters were born well before my marriage and I named my children, Boban and Molly, later,'' says Toms. The real-life Boban and Molly are now grown-ups who have children and grandchildren now, he adds.
"My Boban and Molly are ageless; I have never made them age, for, nobody would love a grandfather Boban or a grandmother Molly."
The teleserial has a line-up of talented artistes, including Mallika Sukumaran, Manju Pillai, Babu Swami, Maniyan Pillai Raju, et al, besides two new faces who will give life to Boban and Molly, says Mr. Vijayakumar.
He claims that this is for the first time that the cartoon characters of Toms will appear on the silver screen adding that certain major television channels had already approached the producers, seeking the telecasting rights.
