Thiruvananthapuram: The District Supply Office has initiated action against nine ration shops in the Valiathura and Cheriathura areas on the charge of under weighing free ration rice to customers and supplying inferior quality of grains.

A squad led by the District Supply Officer raided the ration outlets and the residence of ration cardholders on Friday following widespread complaints about irregularities in the supply of free rice. The squad found that the rice supplied by shop no. 233 run by Jerome of Cheriathura was of inferior quality and infested with worms and insects.

According to a pressnote issued by District Supply Officer M. Saidukutty, the dealer has to inform the City Rationing Officer or the Taluk Supply Officer if the stock is found to be of bad quality. He should also refrain from supplying it to customers.

The squad also found that the dealer had supplied one kg less than the stipulated free ration of five kg per week for each cardholder.

The licences of the ration shops run by Lourde Mary (ARD- 226), Jerome (233), Lawrence Thomas (258) and Catherine Silva (287) have been temporarily withdrawn. The pressnote said alternate arrangements had been made to ensure the supply of free ration rice to eligible cardholders. The public have been directed to contact the City Rationing Officer, Vanchiyoor on 2461632 for details.
