KOCHI: The former judge of the Supreme Court V.R. Krishna Iyer has asked the Government to take measures to avert pollution of the Periyar River.

In a release here on Friday, Mr. Iyer said the Periyar is a living value for the people of Kalady to Kochi for drinking water and other vital purposes. ``Pollution of these holy waters is a violation of the Constitution and the Kerala State Pollution Control Board as well as the State Government are guilty in many ways in making Periyar an aquatic terror."

He said the State was merely watching and not fighting the toxic hazard.

"This is culpable. The health of the people is in peril. The Ministry concerned, as an immediate fundamental activity, must take measures to avert the industrial water pollution now and not after a tragedy occurs. Litigation, after the aqua violation, is a long, costly and wasteful process," Mr. Iyer said in the statement.
