Widows to get a monthly pension of Rs.500

KOLLAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has accused the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) Government of having made only announcements on benefits for the victims of the tsunami that devastated the Kerala coast on December 26, 2005.

Inaugurating the State-level distribution of aid to the tsunami victims here on Monday, he said the Left Democratic Front Government was implementing the announcements made by the UDF Government.

He said each widow of those killed by the tsunami would be given a monthly pension of Rs.500. He inaugurated the pension scheme by handing over a cheque to Baby, widow of Ganesh from Azheekkal in Alapad.

The Cheif Minister said that a separate scheme for the tsunami victims of Arattupuzha in Alappuzha district would be announced soon.

He said the construction of 2,700 houses for the tsunami victims of Alapd had been completed.
