Twenty-one caparisoned elephants participated in the festival
PATHANAMTHITTA: Thiruvalla Pooram, a cultural fete organised by the Central Travancore Development Society as part of the Onam celebrations, was held with pomp and gaiety in Thiruvalla town on Sunday.
The celebrations began with a mass feast held at the St. John's Cathedral Hall at noon. It was followed by a cultural procession from the cathedral premises to Thiruvalla Public Stadium.
A swarming crowd, representing a cross-section of Central Travancore, thronged the town to witness the event.
The parading of caparisoned elephants and the Kudamaattom, exchanging of parasols in varied colours and designs by the people atop the elephants, were akin to the famous Thrissur Pooram.
Twenty-one caparisoned elephants participated in the Pooram. There were Panchavaadyam, Paandimelom and other percussion ensembles.
Transport Minister Mathew T.Thomas inaugurated the public meeting. CTDS president Abraham Mulamoottil, presided. Rajya Sabha Member P.J.Kurien; MLAs Joseph M. Puthusserry and Raju Abraham; society secretary K. Prakash Babu and vice-president M. Salim spoke.
Filmmaker Blessy and actor Manoj K. Jayan were the guests of honour.
A fireworks display in the evening marked the culmination of the fete.
