THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An exhibition featuring milestones in the political, cultural and social history of Kerala from the formation of the State in 1956 to the present day began at the VJT hall on Friday. The show titled `Suvarnakeralam' features newspaper reports, pictures and visuals on landmark events that have shaped the evolution of the State over the years. The event is organised by Jai Hind TV in connection with the Golden Jubilee of the formation of Kerala.

Prominent among the exhibits are newspaper reports on the declaration of Emergency, the Perumon train tragedy, the split in the Communist party, the exit of K. R. Gouri and M.V. Raghavan from the CPI(M), the declaration of Arundhati Roy as the Booker Prize winner, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's rise to presidency and the death of leading lights like A.K.G., Panampalli Govinda Menon, E. M. S. Namboodiripad, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Vallathol, Thakazhy Sivasankara Pillai and O. V.Vijayan.

The pictures on exhibition cover the life of political leaders like E.M.S., K. Karunakaran and E. K.Nayanar, cultural personalities, including Sardar K. M. Panikker, Kesari Balakrishna Pillai, G. Sankara Kurup, Lalithambika Antharjanam and Vaikom Mohammed Basheer, matinee idols like Satyan, Prem Nazir, Ummer and Vijayasree, cartoonist Abu Abraham and Carnatic musician Chembai Vaidyanath Bhagavathar.

The exhibition also features a galaxy of sportspersons who have made it to the international arena.

Inaugurating the show, poet Sugathakumari said the alienation of the Malayali from his language and culture was responsible for undesirable trends such as communalism. She stressed the need for a return to the roots. Congress leaders M. M. Hassan, Pandalam Sudhakaran and V. S. Sivakumar, freedom fighter K. P. Madhavan, Jai Hind TV chief editor Sunnykutty Abraham and football coach M. Najeeb were among those present.

The exhibition will conclude on Saturday evening.
