KOCHI: The 14th Shadkala Govinda Marar Music Festival organised by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi began at Ramamangalam in Ernakulam district on Sunday.
Cultural Affairs Minister M.A. Baby inaugurated the three-day festival. The programmes began with Keli at 7 a.m., by Mahesh Kumar, Kalamandalam Sreekumar and Murali Thazhathedathu.
Sopana Sangeetham by Thrikkampuram Krishnankutty Marar and classical music contest were also held. A cultural procession was taken out at Ramamangalam prior to the inaugural session.
After the inauguration, Gayatri Veena concert by Vaikom Vijayalakshmi was held, followed by vocal concert by K. Omanakutty. On Monday, a sangeetharadhana led by Mavelikkara Prabhakara Varma, `Mizhavil Thayambaka,' led by Kalamandalam Eashwaranunni were the highlights. A flute recital by Kudamaloor Janardanan followed. A seminar on `Sopana Sangeetham - Today, Tomorrow,' will be held on October 24. Sukumari Narendra Menon, Thrikkampuram Krishnankutty Marar, Nelluvai Krishnankutti, Krishnamani Marar and Puthukkode Sadasiva Marar will take part, with N.P. Vijayakrishnan acting as moderator. Another seminar on `Temple Percussion Arts' will be held in the afternoon with George S. Paul as moderator. Kalamandalam Kesavan, Thripunithura Krishnadas, Kallekkulangara Achuthankutty Marar and K.B.Rajanand will participate. `Layalahari' by Thripunithura Krishnadas will be held afterwards.
Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran will inaugurate the valedictory session on Tuesday. Vineetha Nedungadi will present Mohiniyattam after the meeting, followed by fusion music event presented by Balabhaskar and team.
The Shadkala Govinda Marar Smaraka Kala Samithi, formed under the initiative of the late M.P. Manmadhan, was functioning for the past 25 years at Ramamangalam, native place of the legendary singer. Mavelikkara Prabhakara Varma is the chairman of the Samithi. Marar, who had lived during the middle of 19th century, was an unparalleled personality in classical music in South India.
