THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The association of the former students of the Mar Ivanios College AMICOS has announced this year's Benedict Mar Gregorios award. The award instituted in memory of the first principal of the Mar Ivanios College goes to veteran playback singer K.J. Jesudas.
Governor R.L. Bhatia will give the award to the singer at a ceremony to be held at the college auditorium on October 10, the death anniversary of the Archbishop. This was announced at a press conference held here on Wednesday by Puthusseri Ramachandran, chairman, judging committee. "The award is given to persons who have made significant contributions in areas such as education, economics, environmental protection, healthcare, and culture; areas that were close to the heart of the Archbishop. Mar Gregorios was a great humanist who respected other faiths and had a deep respect for the artistic and cultural heritage of the country. Jesudas used his musical talents for furthering the cause of society based on tolerance and brotherhood, " Dr. Ramachandran said.
Major Archbishop of the Malankara Archiepiscopal church Moranmor Cyril Mar Baselios will preside. Law Minister M. Vijayakumar, leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy, AMICOS president Palode Ravi and principal father Samuel Kattukallil will be among those who would participate.
