Release of water from Neyyar dam for Irrigation in Kanyakumari

CHENNAI: Public Works Minister Durai Murugan said on Thursday that so far no water had been released from the Neyyar dam in Kerala for irrigation in Kanyakumari.

He said that though Kerala Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan had been saying for the past two months that water would be released from the dam to Tamil Nadu for irrigation, this had not happened.

It was also "sad" that the Kerala Chief Minister had said that actions of the Tamil Nadu Government on the Mullaperiyar issue were infuriating. When Tamil Nadu had taken no action, such a statement was surprising, Mr. Durai Murugan said.

Though Ministers and former Ministers had made a habit of visiting Muallaperiyar and issuing statements against Tamil Nadu, it was remaining patient because it believed in good relations with neighbouring States.

Mr. Durai Murugan reminded Mr. Achuthanandan that it was towards this end that the all-party resolution favouring talks was also sent to the Kerala Government.
