Thrissur: Senior BJP leader O. Rajagopal said that the Congress was hijacking the achievements of the former NDA government, including the Vallarpadam container terminal.

He was addressing ‘Paksham-Marupaksham’, a meet-the-press programme, at the Thrissur Press Club on Wednesday.

In her speech at the Thekkinkad Maidan, held a few hours ago, Congress president Sonia Gandhi had included the Vallarpadam project in the list of UPA government’s achievements.

“Her claim is false. The Vajpayee government had given the nod for the container terminal project,” Mr. Rajagopal said.

The State had received substantial allocations and new trains in the rail budget during the NDA rule, he claimed. Reacting to the criticism that the NDA government freed terrorists for release of hostages, he said: “What else should have the NDA done? Leave the innocent passengers and crew to die at the hands of terrorists? Terrorists who attacked the Parliament were eliminated. But what did the UPA do? They couldn’t punish Afzal Guru, who masterminded the attack. We should have zero tolerance towards terrorism.”

He alleged that the UPA’s stand on terrorism was soft. “Intelligence agencies had alerted authorities about a possible attack in Mumbai four days before the terrorists stormed the city, but the government failed to respond.”

Mr.Rajagopal said that the Third Front had no relevance.
