Here is some good news for all those eagerly waiting to read the Malayalam translation of Robert Kanigel's biography of mathematician genius Srinivasa Ramanujan.

The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment is planning to bring out the translation of Mr. Kanigel's book “The Man Who Knew Infinity” in Malayalam soon.

“This is a major initiative that we have planned as part of the series of programmes planned in connection with the National Mathematical Year 2012 in commemoration of the 125{+t}{+h}birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan,” V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Executive Vice-President of the organisation, told The Hindu .

Prof. Pillai said that the council plans to utilise the funds earmarked by the Union government for publishing the Malayalam version of the famous work.

“We have also chalked out several other programmes to step up the knowledge level in mathematics among school and college students. At least 12 training camps for school teachers in mathematics (50 participants each in a camp) will be held this year especially concentrating on rural schools,” he said.

Prof. Pillai said that focused workshops on integrating mathematics into other subjects, particularly basic fundamental sciences will be organised at the college/university level. Some of the themes identified for discussion include mathematics for physics, mathematics for chemistry, mathematics for biology, mathematics for economics, mathematics for social sciences and mathematics for management. This will be done in collaboration with the universities, colleges and the State Council for Higher Education.

The council will invite nearly 20 nationally and internationally renowned mathematicians and organise lectures by them at various places across the State.

The help of the National Board of Higher Mathematics (DAE), the three National Academies of Science in the country, DST and CSIR will be sought for coordinating this programme. The Kerala School of Mathematics, an institution supported by the Department of Atomic Energy and established in Kozhikode by the council, will be the nodal agency for this programme.
