One killed, 50 injured as bus overturns

A private bus overturned at Vazhukkumpara in Kuthiran on the Thrissur-Palakkad National Highway around 8.15 a.m. on Thursday, killing a member of the bus crew and injuring around 50 passengers.

The deceased was identified as Balan, 55, of Kollangode, the conductor of the bus.

The situation of a woman passenger undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city is said to be critical.

The bus was running from Govindapuram to Thrissur. According to the police, the driver lost control of the bus as it was descending a steep slope at Kuthiran. It overturned and rammed an electricity pole. A major accident was averted as the power connection was switched off immediately. The police and fire and rescue force rushed the injured to the District Hospital and two private hospitals here. The bus driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.

Minister for Co-operation C. N. Balakrishnan; Mayor I.P. Paul; District Panchayat President K.V. Dasan; K. Radhakrishnan and M.P. Vincent, MLAs; called on the injured at various hospitals.

The deceased is survived by his wife and two children.
