Thiruvananthapuram: The Excise Enforcement and Anti-Narcotic Special Squad, Thiruvananthapuram, on Friday, confiscated a lorry carrying nearly 2,000 litres of spirit in a secret chamber in its hold.

It arrested the lorry driver, Vincent, of Manathavadi, and his assistant, Shari, of Chennai. They were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.

Circle Inspector G. Radhakrishna Pillai said the spirit was from an unknown distillery in Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. It was contained in 50 plastic cans, each having a capacity of 35 litres.

A middleman had delivered the lorry to the driver near Chittoor.

Two persons travelling in a car piloted the lorry from Chittoor. The lorry entered Kerala through the Poovar check-post in Thiruvananthapuram.

Investigators said the driver was asked to park the lorry at a petrol pump at Attingal.

The Excise department intercepted the lorry at Chakka. They said they had the mobile numbers of the persons who were piloting the vehicle. A detailed investigation was under way to identify the person for whom the spirit was smuggled.

Assistant Excise Commissioner, Thiruvananthapuram, K.N. Mohanlal; Mr. Pillai; inspector T. Ani Kumar; and intelligence officers B. Harikumar and K. Lal Kumar headed the operation.
