KOCHI: Police officers should work towards winning the confidence of the public. Some officers continue to behave rudely, thus bringing the force into disrepute, said Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Minister for Home and Vigilance.
He was addressing the police officers in Ernakulam range at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute hall here on Saturday.
Power should not be used to harass or intimidate the public.
Police should implement the law in a gentle manner. Vehicle checking is done to bring down the accident rate, and not to make collections to the State exchequer. Higher officials should conduct surprise inspections at police stations.
Crime audit should be made for the district to improve the efficiency of policing.
Alert committees to counter terrorist activities must be formed, he said.
Jacob Punnoose, Director General of Police; V.R. Rajeevan, Additional Director General of Police, South Zone; K. Padmakumar, Inspector General, Intelligence; Vinson M. Paul, Inspector General, Ernakulam Range; and select police officers from Superintendents of Police to sub-inspectors in Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Idukki attended the meeting.
