KOLLAM: Writer Kakanadan has requested Forest Minister Benoy Viswom to allocate a male elephant calf in custody of the Forest Department at the Konni elephant kraal to Asramam Sree Krishnaswamy Temple.

In a letter to the Minister, he said that the temple had its own elephant, Gopalakrishnan, which was killed in a road accident three months ago.

The death was a loss not only to the Asramam temple but also to 16 other temples in and around Kollam as Gopalakrishnan had led some of the rituals at these temples during festivals.

Many of the rituals at these temples could lose its aura without an elephant. The male calf at Konni was of the right age to be trained as a temple elephant.

Kakanadan said Gopalakrishan came to the temple as a calf and was tended with utmost care.

The allocation of the calf would be a rejoicing news for Kollam. A petition in this connection was pending before the Forest Department.

Kakanadan concludes the letter stating that he is confident that the Minister will not belie the expectations of the people of Kollam.
