The Vellayil block Congress committee has urged the Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran to take steps for upgrading the West Hill railway station and renaming it as Kozhikode North railway station.

In a memorandum submitted to the Minister, the committee said several Express and Fast Passenger trains now passing through the West Hill station would have halts if the station was upgraded as a subsidiary of the main Kozhikode station.

The proposal would benefits hundreds of commuters in the northern and eastern parts of the city.

As of now, people residing at East Hill, West Hill, Elathur, Atholi, and Perambra had to depend on the Kozhikode railways station.

There were several government and private establishments and a number of educational institutions, including the Government Engineering College, at West Hill.

It was also necessary to construct a footbridge at the West Hill station, the committee said.

Copies of the memorandum were also sent to M.K. Raghavan, MP, and A. Pradeepkumar, MLA, in this regard.
