This year's event to be held in August

A meeting chaired by District Collector P.J. Thomas on Saturday decided to conduct the President's Trophy Boat Race on the Ashtamudi lake on November 1 every year.

The inaugural race this year will be held either on August 29 or 30, considering President Pratibha Patil's convenience.

Addressing the meeting, N. Peethambara Kurup, Kollam MP, said a meeting of Tourism Ministers of all States and Union Territories would be held in Kollam as a prelude to the event.

Steps to tap the tourism potential of Kollam should be taken to bring in investment, he said.

Racecourse

The course of the boat race will be from the Thevally Bridge, across the lake, to the Kollam boat jetty, near the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus depot.

All garbage and other materials dumped in the lake will be removed and the lake dredged to prepare course.

An organising committee meeting on July 23 will discuss the budget details for the race, Mr. Thomas said.

Steps would be taken to ensure that the event attained international standards, Mr. Kurup said.

The organising committee will have the Chief Minister and Ministers as patrons.

The Collector will be the general convener and the MP, its chairman.
