THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State government’s argument that the norms of Centrally sponsored schemes are not conducive to the State is unjustifiable, National Commission for Scheduled Castes Chairman Buta Singh has said.
Mr. Singh told reporters here on Tuesday that the norms were framed after thorough discussions and were approved by Parliament and the National Development Council. All Chief Ministers were members of the council which met at regular intervals. Kerala too was represented in the council, he said.
The commission which reviewed the various schemes and programmes under the social and economic sectors said 1,692 SC families in the State were without drinking water connections.
The commission wanted the State-level monitoring committee for SC/ST welfare to meet more frequently.
The pre-admission training for admission to professional courses for SC students had to be strengthened, he said.
The commission was not happy with the action taken by the government for dealing with cases in which benefits were gained by furnishing fake caste certificates, Mr. Singh said.
