Rahul Easwar, activist and grandson of Tantri Kantararu Maheshwararu (supreme priest of the Sabarimala temple) has called upon members of the Devaswom Board to accept all applications for appointment of ‘poojaris' (priests) for the Sabarimala temple, irrespective of the caste of the applicant.

A demand in this regard was put forward by him at a press conference here on Wednesday. He said that an applicant, if found to have sufficient knowledge and experience about the tantric rites should not be denied the post based on his caste.

By tradition, the Devaswom Board selected the priests by drawing lots after an initial screening process. He requested the board members to take the first step against caste discrimination by granting permission to all non-Brahmin applicants to sit through the interview.
