Thrissur: A new subway will be opened at the Paramekkavu junction on August 31. Speaker K. Radhakrishnan will inaugurate the subway, which is 20.9m long, 5m wide and 2.5m high.

The construction of the Rs.50-lakh subway began on October 11 last year.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Mayor R. Bindu said that construction of a Rs.60-lakh subway near the M.G. Road under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project would begin after Onam.

“If the District Panchayat and the Health Department provide land, a subway can be constructed near the District Hospital too,” she added. After Onam, roads in the corporation limits would be repaired, Swaraj Round re-tarred, and a third pipeline from Peechi inaugurated.

“There is demand from several quarters for tar-macadam roads at the Swaraj Round,” she said.

She alleged that a few institutions, especially those at Patturaikkal, had encroached on public land.

Replying to a question, she said that the corporation was trying to streamline waste disposal in the city.
