District conference witnesses unanimous elections

Kozhikode: T.P. Ramakrishnan, a loyalist of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, was unanimously elected district secretary of the party at the three-day district conference which concluded here on Tuesday. It is his second stint.

He was elected by 37 district committee members at a meeting presided over by State secretariat member V.V. Dakshinamoorthy. As many as 312 delegates participated in the district conference to elect the district committee members.

Mr. Ramakrishnan, an ardent organiser had taken over the reins of the party in the district when Mr. Dakshinamoorthy was elevated to the State secretariat during the previous State conference in Malappuram in 2005 which was marked by rampant factionalism. He had represented the Perambra Assembly constituency in the previous term.

The district conference also elected 32 members, including 14 area secretaries, in the district to take part in the State meet to be held in Kottayam in February 2008. A majority of them belongs to the Pinarayi faction of the party. Only four — K. Raghvan, E.V. Krishnan, N.V. Balakrishnan and A. Pradeepkumar, MLA, — from the V.S. Achuthanandan camp will represent the State conference.

Two new faces P. Lakshman and V.M. Kuttikrishnan have been inducted into the district committee following the induction of Minister of Industries Elamaram Karim and N.K. Radha into the State committee from the district committee. Kozhikode Mayor M. Bhaskaran, P. Sathidevi, MP, and P. Viswan, A. Pradeepkumar, K.K. Lathika and George M. Thomas, all MLAs, figure in the list of district committee members.

The others members are M. Kelappan; C.P. Balan Vaidyar; K. Moosakutty; M. Vasu; P. Mohanan; C. Bhaskaran; E.V. Krishnan; T. Devi; A.K. Padmanabhan; K. Chandran; K. Dasan; T.C. Gopalan; V.P. Kunhikrishnan; P.T. Rajan; T.P. Balakrishnan Nair; M. Mehaboob; K. Kunhahamed; V. Balakrishnan; R. Gopalan; M. Raghavan; A.K. Kannan; A.K. Balan; K. Manukuttan; Mampetta Sreedharan; K.P. Kunhamed Kutty; E. Ramesh Babu; T. Dasan and C.H. Ashokan.

The district conference witnessed no contest either to the district committee or the election of members to represent the State conference, party sources said.

Mr. Ramakrishnan, Mr. Kelappan and Mr. Balan Vaidyar are at present State committee members of the party. In 2002, Mr. Kelappan had contested against M. Dasan to the post of district secretary held in Vadakara. However he was defeated in a keenly-fought election. He had polled 17 votes against 20 cast in favour of the late Dasan. Rumours were rife that Mr. Kelappan, a senior leader of the party, would be dropped from the district committee.
