KOCHI: Lakshadweep administrator B.V. Selvaraj has issued directives to maintain three months’ buffer stock of essential commodities in all the islands within the next one month.

In a release issued here on Monday, the administrator said that he issued directives to the Director (Food and Civil Supplies) and Director (Port, Shipping and Aviation) to deploy all their machinery to provide ration commodities to all ration card holders, as per their monthly allotments. At any point of time, the stock of ration commodities should not come down below two months’ stock. Strict instructions had been issued to the departments of Food and Civil Supplies and Port, Shipping and Aviation to take immediate action to get allotment of full quota of these ration commodities from the government of India and to make arrangements for its transport to the suffering islands within the next 10 days, the release said.

It said that there should not be any complaint from any corner on scarcity of ration commodities, as it was the prime responsibility of the Lakshadweep administration to maintain sufficient stock of rice, sugar and kerosene in all the islands. Mr. Selvaraj said that there should be regular weekly monitoring of the stock of ration commodities at all supply and marketing societies and the Director of Food and Civil Supplies should ensure release of correct measure of commodities to all card holders in the first week of every month.

It is the responsibility of the Director of Port, Shipping and Aviation to make immediate arrangements to transport the Public Distribution System commodities to all islands on intimation of the government allotment.
