Kudumbasree members are happy over the opportunity to showcase their product at the

film festival.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For the members of Kudumbasree, a women-oriented community-based poverty alleviation programme, the International Film Festival of Kerala offers a golden opportunity to showcase their creative skills to the world.

The trendy festival bags, an indispensable accessory for the delegates, are made by Alankar Cloth and Bag, a manufacturing unit of Kudumbasree comprising 10 women based in Amachal.

This is the second consecutive year that the members of the Amachal unit are coming up with a festival bag.

The bags, which appear in over three shades including black, blue and green, owes its existence to a near one-month effort on part of the members of the unit, said a Kudumbasree official.

“The fact the festival provides an opportunity to showcase our creation to the world, through the international delegates who attend the festival, is truly inspirational,” she said.

The ban on plastics has also enhanced the prospects of Kudumbasree units. According to Kudumbasree officials, the units are also actively exploring the possibility of launching training programmes for women to enable them to start small industrial units.
