KANNUR: A convention of physically challenged people will be organised here on December 8 under the auspices of the Thalassery Social Service Society (TSSS), Lions Club and the Health Oriented Project Establishment (HOPE).

The meet, ‘Oasis 2007,’ envisaged establishment of a platform of the physically challenged people in the region, Oasis general convener and TSSS director Mani Melvettom said at a press meet here on Wednesday. He said 125 wheelchairs and 50 crutches would be distributed to physically challenged people. Also, a computer with special software to enable visually impaired teachers prepare their lessons would be provided.

The other welfare measures include distribution of education assistance to 125 differently abled children from different communities, opening of a marriage bureau for them, formation of a forum of organisations and institutions working for the disabled people in Malabar region and introduction of government schemes and concessions for the physically challenged people.

Fr. Melvettom said there would be an exhibition of paintings, a live painting show and cultural programmes. The function will be inaugurated by Kerala State Handicapped Development Corporation managing director Elizabeth Rozario at Sreepuram Auditorium at 10.30 a.m. on December 8.

Lions district governor O.C. Manomohanan and HOPE general secretary Jayamohan were present at the press conference.
