Assembly committee sitting held

Kozhikode: Writing off all debts of fishermen was a major demand that came up at the sitting of the Assembly committee on the fishermen debt relief commission Bill held here on Monday.

Another demand was to extend all benefits availed by traditional fishermen to all workers in allied sectors of fisheries industry.

However, this demand was opposed on the ground that it would create scope for usurping benefits meant for the traditional fishermen community.

It was suggested that all those covered by the Fishermen Welfare Society Act should be brought under the purview of the proposed legislation.

Various individuals and organisations appeared at the sitting of the Assembly panel and aired their views.

Fisheries Minister S. Sarma, who was present on the occasion, expressed the hope that the Bill would be made a law in the coming session of the Assembly.

The committee would submit its report after completing its sittings in Ernakulam, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram.

The panel has already held sittings in Kollam, Alappuzha, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
