Multi-storey Ashtamudi Backwater Cruise Complex to come up

KOLLAM: The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has come up with a project aimed at tapping the tourism potential of Ashtamudi Lake.

A decision to this effect was taken at a DTPC executive committee meeting chaired by District Collector A. Shajehan on Tuesday.

The boat jetty near the KSRTC depot in the city, which is serving as the gateway to the Ashtamudi Lake, will get a facelift. Mr. Shajehan said a multi-storey Ashtamudi Backwater Cruise Complex will be constructed at the jetty.

‘Destination Asramam’ beautification scheme, tourism terminals attached to the Smart Waterway, the ethnic bank scheme linking the scenic banks of the lake, tourism cottages on the banks, snack bars, cruise packages and cultural tourism are being planned under the project. Mr. Shajehan said the project would be implemented with fund support from the Central and State governments.

Rs.5 crore is expected from the Central government. The projects will come up along the eight creeks of the lake and the Asramam Guest House complex.

The Thiruvananthapuram-based Habitat Technology Group is designing the entire project. The cruise complex at the boat jetty will comprise a tourism information centre, pay and use toilets, rest rooms, souvenir shop, communication centre, a mini conference hall, a roof top restaurant, parking space and an office of the DTPC.

Under the project, the Asramam Maidan will be made a permanent exhibition ground.

A bay for senior citizens will be constructed. Accommodation facilities for craftsmen, which will enable them to engage in handicraft production there, will be constructed at the ‘Paramparya Museum’ at Asramam. A fishing hut scheme, meant for angling, will also come up.
