CHANGANASSERY: C.K. Padmanabhan, member of the national executive of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), has asked the CPI(M) to give up the Home portfolio in the light of the incidents at Changanassery last Friday, which had resulted in the killing of a police officer on duty.

Inaugurating the dawn to dusk fast organised by the Sangh Parivar organisations here on Tuesday, Mr. Padmanabhan said any of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) coalition partners should take over the portfolio from the CPI(M) as every time the party held the portfolio, it had used the department to meet political ends.

“We are not seeking the resignation of Kodiyeri Balakrishnan as Home Minister. We want the CPI(M) to relinquish the portfolio," he said. It was necessary to bring back credibility to the police force. He wanted the LDF partners to put pressure on the CPI(M) for the purpose.

A.R. Mohan, State general secretary of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), B. Radhakrishna Menon, State secretary, BJP, M.K. Narayanan Namboodiri, district president, BJP, and others spoke on the occasion.

Meanwhile, the police brought two of the accused who were lodged at the Kottayam sub jail, to the district hospital for medical examination. They were taken back to the jail after a check-up.
