Calls for ban on import of coconut-based products

Farmers from Malappuram to take part in Delhi rally

MALAPPURAM: The All India Kisan Sabha will organise a dharna of coconut tree climbers in front of the Kuttippuram railway station on October 27 pressing various demands including a ban on the import of coconut-based products and declaration of an exclusive coconut package for Kerala.

The Kisan Sabha has been demanding protection for coconut farming, procurement of coconut by National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation India Limited (NAFED) for Rs.6, transfer of technology and rights to farmers for production of ‘neera’ as well as jaggery, vinegar and wine from ‘neera’.

Kisan Sabha district secretary P.M. Vasudevan said that a dharna would be staged in front of the Secretariat raising those demands on Tuesday.

He said farmers from Malappuram would take part in a mass rally to be taken out in Delhi on October 31 and give a memorandum to Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar demanding a solution to the problems faced by coconut farmers.

Kisan Sabha national council member P. Thulasidas Menon will inaugurate the dharna before the Kuttippuram railway station.
