In protest against the delay in forming the proposed railway zone

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a State-wide hartal on November 1, the Kerala formation day, in protest against the delay in forming the proposed railway zone and laying stone for the coach factory in the State as announced by the Centre.

BJP State president P.K. Krishnadas told reporters here on Wednesday that the Centre and State governments had ridiculed Keralites by deciding to give 79-km broad gauge line to the State instead of the 623-km broad gauge line given to Tamil Nadu for forming the Salem division.

If the Centre decided to go ahead with the decision to inaugurate the proposed Salem division on November 1, it should announce the formation of the proposed railway zone and also lay the foundation stone for the coach factory in the State on the same day itself. If the Centre honoured the agreement, the BJP would repeal the hartal call, he said.

Mr. Krishnadas said the Central and State governments had not signed any pact and it was only a mutual adjustment which went against the interests of the State. A coach factory proposed by the Centre in the Eleventh Plan would be set up at Rae Bareli and now the State would have to wait for another year. A meeting of party leaders which concluded here on Tuesday decided to observe a protest day on October 31.
