Thiruvananthapuram: Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran has asked the team deputed by the State government to study the seismic effect of the recent tremors which took place in the area of the Mullaperiyar dam within three months.

The Minister gave such a direction when the team, Arun Bappat, chairman, and D.K. Paul, member, held discussions with him here on Monday.

Mr. Bappat is the former head of the earthquake engineering department of the Power Research Station, Delhi, and adviser to the committees studying the possibilities of earthquakes in countries like China, Nepal and Pakistan.

Mr. Paul is the head of the earthquake engineering department of IIT, Roorkee.

The team was deputed by the government in the wake of repeated tremors which were reported from the place where the Mullaperiyar dam was located.

It discussed the threats posed by the tremors to the dam with the Minister. He asked the the team to examine in detail the technical details of the dam and conduct a scientific study on the seismic effect to the dam. He asked the team to suggest steps for resisting quakes when the new dam was constructed. The members of the committee set up by the government to advise it on inter-state river water issues also participated in the discussion.
