Kozhikode: An action committee has been formed to focus attention on the inconvenience caused by frequent closure of the railway gate near the Elathur Railway Station on the road connecting the NH 47 to Puthiyottilkadavu, Puthukattilkadavu, pre-metric hostel, Industrial Training Centre (ITC) and Kiranraj Mahal.

This is the road leading to ward-2 and ward-3 in Elathur grama panchayat and Thalakulathoor panchayat.

Hundreds of people are put to great inconvenience on account of the closure of the railway gate.

Their hardships are rising day by day, Kattayil Babu, convener of the Elathur Railway Gate Action Committee said here on Saturday.

Students of ITC, APLP school, GMLP school, and girls students of Pre-metric Hostel and CMC Girls High School are among those using the road every day. The railway gate, when it is closed to allow trains to pass through, has become an obstacle to those going to the Elathur police station, post office, telephone exchange, village office, the office of Kerafed, temples and a mosque.

Action committee chairman T.P. Vijayan and Kattayil Babu said that following agitations and demonstrations organised by the action committee, the railway authorities had in principle agreed to shift the railway gate.

The committee-members had informed the then Divisional Railway Manager when he was in Kozhikode way back in the late 1990s about the need to shift the railway gate. However, “his promise” has not materialised.

The Elathur Railway Gate Action Committee has renewed its appeal to the authorities concerned to shift the gate so as to lessen their hardships.
