More infrastructure facilities to be provided at Walayar check-post

Special squads to check corrupt practices

Motor Vehicles Department opens Helpline

PALAKKAD: The new modernised Commercial Taxes check-post and the launch of the “corruption-free Walayar check-post” by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Tuesday are expected to go a long way towards effective collection of taxes and prevention of corruption at all check-posts in the State.

The modernised check-post will facilitate entry of vehicles with valid documents into the State within 15 minutes of their arrival.

More facilities

Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac, who presided over the inaugural function, said the Government would provide more infrastructure facilities and trained staff at the check-post. The new arrangements include a token system and public address system to speed up clearance for vehicles coming from outside the State.

He said the delay in clearing vehicles at the check-post at Walayar had affected the movement of container transport to Kochi Port. Streamlining of processes at the check-post was in the interests of development of the State, he said.

Special squads

The Minister said special squads had been posted on duty to check corrupt practices. Officials who indulged in corruption will be arrested. A police posse will be put on duty at the check-post to prevent the activities of the so-called mafia gangs.

He said proper lighting would be provided at the check-post. Special arrangements have been made to draw lines from Malabar Cements Ltd.

Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas, who inaugurated a Helpline at the Commercial Taxes check-post, said a team of officials of the Motor Vehicles Department would be posted at the check-post for efficient and corruption-free running of the Department’s check-post. The Helpline will provide assistance to drivers to fill up the required forms.

The online transfer of records of goods brought to the State was inaugurated by Deputy Speaker Jose Baby at the function. The facility is to help the Government get information about the goods brought to the State through Walayar so that the tax collection could be made more professional and easy.
