KOLLAM: The Centre has agreed to sanction Rs. 8 crore for developing infrastructure at the Kollam cargo port, Union Commerce Secretary Gopalakrishna Pillai said this on Tuesday during a visit to the port, which is expected to be commission in August.

Mr. Pillai said the money was from the fund for promotion of export-oriented activities.

He visited the port on a personal request made by Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan in Delhi. The Minister, who represents Kollam in the Assembly, accompanied Mr. Pillai to the port.

Mayor N. Padmalochanan was present.

P.I. Shiekh Pareeth, Chief Engineer of the Harbour Engineering Department, said the allocation would be utilised for upgrading facilities.

The port was recently notified by the Customs Department. The first ship to call here will bring a consignment of timber from Myanmar.

Work on fencing the port complex is in progress.
