KOCHI: Immediate steps will be taken to find a new site for dumping garbage, Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said.
The responsibilities and powers of garbage management have been shifted out of Kochi Corporation and given to the district administration, he said. The Collector has been given financial and administrative powers to execute the task. Besides, the Collector will head the monitoring committee for setting up the new garbage treatment plant.
A Government Order for this will be issued immediately by the Local Self-Government Department, he said.
No one has a definite answer regarding the removal of garbage that has piled u on the streets even as the Government shifted the responsibility of finding out alternative dumping site to the district administration.
A meeting chaired by the Chief Minister in Thiruvananthapuram decided not to dump waste at Brahmapuram till the work on the solid waste treatment plant was over.
“No one has an answer regarding the ways in which the accumulated waste is to be removed from the streets,” said Mayor Mercy Williams. “The identification of alternative dumping site and evolving the process for sanitary landfill will take some time.
“Then comes the question how to manage the waste that has already been dumped on the streets and the garbage that will be generated in the coming days. No one has an answer for these issues,” Ms. Williams said.
Now, it is the responsibility of the district administration to solve the crisis. The question on how to remove the waste should be taken up with the Collector, she said.
The State Government handed over the responsibilities to the Collector as a step to solve the crisis due to the delay in removing waste. It is a measure for solving the crisis, she said. Under the new circumstances, the responsibility of the Corporation will be to supply the workers and funds as demanded by the district administration, Ms. Williams said.
