20 fresh cases of suspected chikungunya reported in district

Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 20 new cases of suspected chikungunya were reported from different places in the district on Sunday, taking the total number of cases to 439.

While 719 fever patients turned up at various hospitals and medical camps, there were no fresh cases of malaria, dengue fever or leptospirosis on Sunday. The district health administration put the total number of fever cases at 58,555.

District Medical Officer Kumari G. Prema said 11 of the fresh suspected chikungunya cases were reported from Perungadavila, eight from Vellarada and one from Valiathura. The National Rural Health Mission on Sunday organised medical camps at Kanyakulangara and Aanad while the Army Medical Corps conducted health camps at Vellarada and Perungadavila. As many as 11,00 people turned up at the camps for screening and treatment. Doctors from the allopathy, ayurveda and homoeopathy streams were present. Three malaria cases were reported from the Pulluvila area on Saturday.

Meanwhile, vector control activities continued throughout the district on Sunday. Teams deputed by the City Corporation and the Health Department carried out intense fogging in the mosquito-infested places.
