KOCHI: The city police are planning to crack down on illegal Ayurvedic massage centres.

The drive comes in the light of mushrooming of massage parlours without proper authorisation or licence and most of them being used as a cover for anti-social activities.

"We registered some cases in the last 20 days against massage centres being used as a cover mostly for prostitution," said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner.

The most-repeated procedure is registering with the corporation as a centre for Ayurvedic massage and soliciting customers for prostitution. "Since the drive began, we have been getting a good information flow on such centres," said Mr. Abraham.

The police are now insisting on massage centres displaying their licences properly and the presence of a qualified Ayurveda physician at the centre. Women will not be allowed to work at massage centres meant for men. Also, the police are not allowing mixed massage centres catering to both men and women.

Surprise checks would continue at illegal massage centres and strict action would be initiated against those found not complying with the stipulated conditions in operating such centres, said Mr. Abraham.
