Government sanctions Rs.40.77 lakh for the purpose

KOTTAYAM: The State Government has sanctioned Rs.40.77 lakh for setting up a pilgrim tourism complex at St. Mary's Church, Manarcadu. The church, belonging to the Jacobite Syrian denomination, is the first such centre in Kottayam, said V.N. Vasavan, MLA. The tourism complex will have a conference hall, lobby, security rooms, and other facilities, he said.

Another Rs.15-lakh facility for tourists will come up at Kodimatha. The amenities centre has been sanctioned in view of the increasing tourist traffic via Kodoor river to Kottayam town, Thekkady and Munnar.

The centre will also house a tourist information centre. Rs.71 lakh was spent as MLA special development fund in the last nine months, he said. 21 schools were provided computers using the fund.

Mr. Vasavan said work on two key projects, which would go a long way in easing the traffic through the town, would commence soon. The Thoombil bridge, which connects the town with the western areas, will be modernised. The present bridge will be demolished and a 12-metre wide bridge would come up. The work on this Rs.1.25-crore project would commence on Saturday, he said. The Meenanchira Canal in Thiruvarpu panchayat, bordering the town, will be cleaned, deepened and pathways will be constructed on the sides. The Rs.65-lakh project will get under way on April 7.
