KOCHI: The ideals of Sree Narayana Guru and Ayyankali in taking up the struggle for the downtrodden are followed closely by the Left parties, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said. He was speaking at the inauguration of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Paliyam struggle at Palluruthy Veli ground on Friday.

The historic struggle was taken out to secure rights for the lower caste people to walk in front of Paliyam temple. E.K. Narayanan, who was the volunteer captain at that rally, was honoured at the meeting. Mr. Achuthanandan presented a memento to the veteran leader.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government had taken steps to improve the condition of farmers and other working groups, which were suffering under the policies taken by the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) Government, Mr. Achuthanandan said.

T.K. Valsan, CPI (M) area committee secretary, presided. Minister for Fisheries S. Sarma; C.M. Dinesh Mani, MLA; M.M. Lawrence, CITU State general secretary; T.K. Mohanan, CPI (M) district secretariat member; and John Fernandes, district committee member, spoke.

A symbolic rally was taken out from Edakochi to the Veli ground. This rally will proceed to Cherai on Sunday and on Monday CPI (M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the public meeting marking the conclusion of the anniversary celebrations.
