MALAPPURAM: The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court here on Thursday rejected a plea by counsel for Hilal Mohammed to change the date of hearing on a plea by Crime Branch Superintendent of Police (SP) to cancel Mr. Mohammed's bail.
The court on Wednesday had posted the petition of the SP to Monday and directed Mr. Mohammed to appear before it. Mr. Mohammed's counsel, S.K. Premraj, requested the court to either advance or postpone the date of hearing as he had another important case to attend on Monday. However, the court refused to entertain the plea and maintained that Mr. Mohammed appear before it on Monday. Mr. Mohammed, nicknamed FM, has been facing trial in the same court in a cheating case under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He has been accused of extorting Rs.35.5 lakh from Illikkal Moosa Haji by threatening to get him arrested under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange And Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA). The court had granted him conditional bail on February 8. As directed by the court, he surrendered his passport on February 9.
Mr. Mohammed kicked up a row two days ago when he told The Malayalam News, a newspaper published from Jeddah, that he had travelled abroad using the additional pages of the passport (Z 1717047) he had surrendered.
