KOLLAM: The Environment Protection Coordination Council is organising an enviroment convention at Arakal hilltop near here on Sunday to chart out a strong strategy to counter the allegedly deteriorating environment situation in the district. 40 injured in accident

THRISSUR: Nearly 40 persons were injured, three of them seriously, when a private bus overturned at Ollur on Saturday evening. Thirteen persons have been admitted to district hospital. The injured have also been admitted to a few private hospitals. The police said the accident occurred around 5.45 p.m. Staff Reporter

Graft alleged

KOTTAYAM: All-India Ration Dealers' Association (AIRDA) general secretary Babychan Mukkadan on Saturday alleged that the office of Minister for Civil Supplies C. Divakaran is under the influence of the `ration mafia' which is trying to do away with the public distribution system in the State.

He was reacting to the statement by Mr. Divakaran on the issue of `mafia' in the public distribution system. Mr. Mukkadan alleged that a section of officers in the Minister's office were engaged in large-scale corruption, especially in the transfer of taluk supply officers (TSO). Staff Reporter

Refresher camp for drivers organised

KOZHIKODE: E.A. Babu, Kozhikode Regional Transport Officer, inaugurated a refresher camp for heavy vehicle drivers organised jointly by the Union Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Ministry and Santhigiri Ashramam here on January 18 and 19. N.P.Venugopalan, district coordinator of Viswasamskarika Navodhana Kendram, presided over the inaugural function. Interim relief sanctioned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has sanctioned interim relief to employees of hospital and dispensary cooperative societies in the State preparatory to giving pay revision on the basis of a letter addressed to it by chairman of the State Cooperative Union E. Narayanan. The employees of Class I special grade hospital societies will get 20 per cent of the basic pay subject to a maximum of Rs.500, those of Class II societies a maximum of Rs. 400 and those of Class III, IV and V societies a maximum of Rs. 300 as interim relief. Draft norms for transfer

THIRUVANANTHPURAM: The Local Administration Department has drawn up draft norms for transfer of employees in Rural Development, Urban Affairs and Panchayat departments. Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty said in a release here on Friday that copy of the draft norms had been distributed to service organisations to elicit their views. The norms would be finalised by April after hearing their views. Mr. Kutty held discussions with representatives of the organisations. He promised to expedite steps to redress their grievances. Compensation for crop loss sanctioned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Agricultural Insurance Company of India has sanctioned Rs.17.65 lakh as compensation for crop loss during 2005-06. The insurance policy under which the compensation is released covers banana and tapioca during kharif season and paddy during rabbi seasons in areas notified by the Government. Special Correspondent

Plea to review curbs on noise pollution

Thiruvananthapuram: The Hindu Aikya Vedi has said that places of worship should be exempted from the noise pollution curbs imposed by the Supreme Court. Its functionary, K.P. Haridas, in a statement here on Saturday urged the Central and the State Governments to file review petitions against the order. He said the order would affect the places of worship of the Hindus. He said the issue should be taken up immediately as the season of festivals and poorams was around the corner. Special Correspondent
