The Christian community in the district on Sunday offered special payers on Palm Sunday, which marks the beginning of Holy Week.

Palm Sunday is observed in commemoration of the solemn entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem where he was welcomed by the people with branches of palm trees.

Palm branches are considered symbols of joy and victory. Special services were held in churches in the district to mark the occasion with palm leaves being blessed and distributed to the faithful.

Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath led the services at Lourde's Metropolitan Church while Archbishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy led it at the Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours. In Kochi, interim Administrator for the Syro-Malabar Church Bishop Bosco Puthur led the Palm Sunday procession and blessing of the palm leaves at St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica on Sunday morning.

He led the Mass and delivered the homily. Archbishop Francis Kallarakkal of Varappuzha led the Palm Sunday celebrations at St. Francis Assisi Cathedral in Kochi.
