KOLLAM: Kerala Congress(B) leader R. Balakrishna Pillai inaugurated a fast by the UDF at the Press Club Maidan here on Thursday to protest against the alleged police- goonda- mafia nexus.

Mr. Pillai alleged that corruption was rampant and there was a breakdown in the law and order situation.

He said the crime cases registered by the police during the three-and-a-half years of LDF rule were three times higher than that registered during the five-year term of the UDF.

More than 1000 UDF workers took part in the fast that began at 9 a.m. and concluded at 6 p.m.

District chairman of the UDF Sooranad Rajashekaran presided over the fast.

UDF leaders N. Peethambara Kurup, MP, K.C. Rajan, Kadavur Sivadasan, K. Suresh Babu, V. Sathyaseelan, K.B. Ganesh Kumar, MLA, N. Azhakeshan, A. Younus Kunju, Benny Kakkad, M.H. Shariyar, Prem Ushar, R. Sreedharan Pillai and B. Harikumar spoke. As the fast was in progress, UDF jathas from different mandalams in the district arrived at the venue.

Senior Congress leaders and the former KPCC presidents C.V. Padmarajan and Thennala Balakrishna Pillai addressed the gathering and offered lemon juice to those on fast to formally call off the fast at 6 p.m.
